I had my first lesson today, which basically was just a meeting about what I wanted to focus on the the next two years. I had thought about the rep that I wanted to play, and written down a fairly detailed list. I am not sure if I will learn any more concertos after Sibelius. I will want to learn how to play Tchaikovsky and Beethoven for sure, but mainly for fun. I won't need more than one well crafted major concerto for auditions, so I think my time here might be better spent elsewhere.
After talking about finishing all the Bach sonatas and partitas, Professor Bahn looked at the sonatas that I was interested in playing. They were all acceptable to her, and I'll play half on one recital and half on my second recital.
Brahms G major sonata
Beethoven sonata no. 5, "Spring"
Poulenc sonata
will be my first program, plus some short pieces like Kreisler works.
Schubert 'Duo' sonata
Debussy sonata
and either
Prokofiev sonata no. 2
or
Stravinsky Suite Italienne
I'm very excited to play just about every sonata I ever wished I could play! But it's a ton of music to learn in addition to finishing Sibelius and Bach, going through Rode Caprices, about 10 Paganini Caprices that I picked out, and of course scales, arpeggios, 3rds, 6ths, octaves, and 10ths. Plus orchestra, orchestral excerpts, and I'd really like to get involved in chamber music next semester. I'll be spending a lot of time in the practice rooms, for sure.
