The flights were not bad at all. I slept all the way to Toronto, and then was seated next to a sweet Macedonian lady for the 8 hour flight to Wien. I called Ben once I got my luggage and CAT ticket, and he met me at the new and improved Landstrasse station. He has a nice place for one, and though it's a strange, long layout, there's plenty of room for me to sleep on the couch for a few days.
I sent out a few more emails and I already heard back from someone about a studio apartment, so I'm very excited about going out to see it tomorrow! I have been increasingly nervous about how long it will take me to find a place. Not having any checks might be an issue, but if I have to pay the deposit with cash, that shouldn't be a deal breaker. I need an address before I can set up a bank account here, naturally.
I took a bit of a scenic route downtown via the U6 and U3, only to find that Pasha is closed temporarily. I wandered around and eventually decided to go to the Greek restaurant around the corner from IES where I had my first meal in Wien with Elena and Albert. I was disappointed not to be able to get a Kebap box, but the Gyro plate wasn't too bad.
After my late lunch I went looking for the music shop where I got my Schubert Octet score when I was here in 2010. It took me a while but I found it. I had forgotten that there was a separate shop for non-Classical music, so I freaked out when I walked in for a minute. I couldn't convince myself to buy any new score, but maybe I'll get Beethoven or Mendelssohn String Quartets. I was wanting to give composing another go. Hearing Ars Nova a few weeks ago was really wonderful. Being allowed to sit in on their rehearsals was a special treat.
The city itself inspires me. I can't wait to see the museums and hear some concerts! I really hope Barbara isn't too disappointed, since I hardly practiced all summer, but Ben said she'll understand for sure. It's a new beginning and I couldn't be happier with where I am.
