Pack Rat

I'm helping Dad clean up Martha's old house so they can sell it. It's a small place, and they moved pretty quickly, but there are still several boxes of stuff they have to go through. They will probably throw most of it away, but it reminds me just how much crap we accumulate over the years. Mom was upset that they were going to throw away a bunch of old toys, and packed as much as she could and brought it home. And now she's coming to the point where she can't afford this house and is thinking she might have to sell it and find a smaller place. It would be an enormous undertaking to organize everything and have garage sales. I'm thinking of what I will take to Boulder, and that this is the best time to do some spring cleaning.

Dad said that he felt that he should begin going through his stuff so that Martha and I wouldn't have to do it when he's gone. It's amazing how much stuff we think we need. I've wanted to live a simple life, maybe in a tiny home (800 sq. ft. or less). I definitely don't want to have a tv anymore. I waste far too much time watching tv.

I really want to buy more books. I love Steinbeck, and East of Eden sound amazing. Lindsey recommended The Brothers Karamazov. But I have several novels that I never read sitting on the family room bookshelves. The Tin Drum and The Trial are two I hope to finish. Also, I want to read Les Miserables. I have struck on the particular notion that there is only so much you can experience in life, and that it would be best to pick a small collection of books, music, movies, and art in order to let them sink into your soul. The Lord of the Rings is one of those books for me. I think The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Catcher in the Rye are two others. Anyway, I can find Steinbeck and Dostoevsky in any bookstore, so they can wait.
