Mom asked about it today and she bought the three opera DVDs I wanted, with the promise that I wouldn't watch them until my actual birthday. I had actually forgotten that my birthday was coming up so soon. It falls on a Sunday, so I think I'd like to try to put something together. I'm excited to take Kevin Lui out to Patterson House for his 21st birthday.
I am super excited for the opera DVDs. I got the L'Elisir D'amore version with Villazon / Netrebko because they taped a live performance at the Wiener Staatsoper, and the set and costumes are the same as the production I saw with Juan Diego Florez! Plus, I have Netrebko / Villazon in La Traviata (Salzburg Festival, 2005) which I really enjoy.
I discovered Gottlob Frick from this video of Der Freischütz.
I was almost swayed by Lucia Popp in the 1983 Munich production of Die Zauberflöte, but I really like the choreography, acting, and costumes of the Keenlyside version, which I think is adorable. Diana Damrau hitting a home run with the Queen of the Night aria doesn't hurt, either. (also, their diction is so good, one day I hope to listen / watch it without subtitles.)
Personally, I love the Ingmar Bergman version, even though it's in Swedish.
