Cello Sonatas

No beer tonight. The liquor store was closed, which wasn't surprising considering I didn't even leave the computer lab until after midnight. I ran into the 7 Eleven next door and got a bag of Cheetos.

Blessed with good internet tonight, I talked with Robbie about sonatas that we liked and we swapped a bunch of YouTube videos. Because of my paper I wanted to listen to the Poulenc Cello Sonata. The Cavatine in particular was praised. I really love it, and so did Robbie.

He had sent Rachel a video of the Grieg cello sonata, so I listened to it. The 2nd movement could be boring if you didn't take the utmost care. But I really like Grieg and his cello sonata is wonderful. I showed Robbie the 3rd violin sonata. Today I have been all about slow movements, which isn't usual with me. Like I mentioned in my last post, I'm eager to explore French music.

I really should listen to more cello music. I have a list of sonatas to listen to. Rachmaninoff (too long to listen to tonight. the piano part is incredibly hard), Debussy, Shostakovich, Faure (my internet isn't loading videos as quickly now, so I didn't finish this sonata) and any others I can discover. He liked the Strauss but besides the 2nd movement being boring, the piano part was too difficult. I found the Britten to be bizarre, but its oddness grew on me. The Scherzo in particular is a fun movement. Probably the best pizzacato piece I know, at least for solo string sonata.
