I'm trying very hard not to go overboard with my camera gear. I have a small, light camera case and that's all I ever want to take with me (besides my Dad's small tripod). I don't want to look like a conspicuous idiot, especially if I pair a big flash with my tiny m43 camera. Almost all flashes are as big as my E PL-2 itself. I think I will get a compact flashlight to help me focus at night and for some light painting. Still, I don't plan on focusing on portraits, so an off camera flash would only have so many applications for landscape and night photography, which is what I like to do. Only one way to find out, I suppose, and I would like to have another tool available to me so I can get that creative shot.
But discovering that I could get a cheap off camera flash (under $60) is so tempting. I like that my pop up flash has the versatility of bending upwards for bounce flash, but an off camera flash would open up many more opportunities for creative lighting. I would have to buy some 'universal translators' and a microjack cord to sync the flash with my camera. Not a problem, except that I'd have to choose between my external flash and the electronic viewfinder I just bought. I think that a bigger flash would have helped me get a great picture of that fox, but the electronic viewfinder would be even more useful for focusing. I know I can't always get so close to wildlife, so my pop up flash won't cut it. I think I can stack my EVF on top of the 'universal translator' if I don't mind a ridiculous looking tower on top of my camera.
I don't have any extra money now that I took the plunge and bought myself the VF-3, but this cheap flash definitely will stay on my list.
