We had our send-off concert tonight. It lasted two full hours. I am exhausted and worried how we'll be able to perform such an immense program on next to no sleep. Grace was with us and had to sit through the whole concert. Mom said she couldn't sit still, but she didn't disrupt the performance, so I give her some credit. 2 hours is a long time for any kid.
I'm excited to go, even though we'll be so busy all the time. Tomorrow everyone is going to Martha and Brian's for an early Christmas. I hope I can find some good gifts for everyone while I'm in China. I don't have a ton of money to spend, but it's likely to be the only time I ever go to China.
I'm unsure whether I'll revert to hating Strauss because our concerts will be so long, or if I'll love An der schönen blauen Donau even more because it means the concert is almost over. I feel like I might have weird dual associations for the waltzes: Vienna and China.
It's a fun program but it's just too long. I like the Chinese pieces a lot (Happy News from Beijing = a Chinese Sabre Dance), Katie is killing Glitter and Be Gay (and Frühlingsstimmen), West Side Story and Rodeo are lots of fun, but there are too many Strauss pieces (and they are each quite long with several waltzes each) and while I like Williams' Cowboys Overture, it drags on and on. As a stand alone piece, I don't like the way the Scherzo from Dvorak's 9th Symphony (New World) ends. I'm probably forgetting something, but that kind of helps prove my point.
